Multi-Day Backcountry
Horseback Riding
At a Glance
Cariboo Backcountry & Chilcotin Range, BC
Season: June–September | Duration: 5 Days | Ability: Tailored to all riding levels
The journey trades the passive observation of a vehicle or aircraft for the quiet, deliberate rhythm of a veteran pack string. Over five days, you will navigate exclusive, privately held guiding territories spanning thousands of acres across British Columbia’s interior plateaus. You will track historic game trails, push through dense old-growth timber, and cross untouched alpine meadows, returning each evening to the absolute comfort of private wilderness ranches and heated canvas outposts.
The Experience
The Obsidian Standard
This five-day framework serves as an operational baseline. Whether you wish to extend your daily saddle hours, incorporate dedicated on-foot wildlife tracking with elite guides, or elevate the open-fire culinary program, every trail vector and basecamp element is engineered around your group's personal vision.
-
Bypass public trailheads entirely with a private transport or helicopter insertion directly to an exclusive-use wilderness ranch. Spend the afternoon matching with your veteran trail horse and acclimatizing to the equipment alongside elite backcountry wranglers. The evening focuses on physical grounding, featuring a chef-prepared welcome dinner overlooking the sweeping interior valleys and an introduction to the expedition’s pacing.
-
Leave the primary ranch behind, riding deep into untouched terrain. The trail demands focus as you navigate dense stands of old-growth timber and cross high mountain streams. By late afternoon, arrive at a custom-built, heated canvas outpost erected silently ahead of your arrival. Step out of the saddle into an orchestrated retreat featuring hot outdoor showers, roaring wood fires, and a heavy, restorative cast-iron dinner.
-
Ascend above the tree line onto vast alpine plateaus where commercial traffic simply does not exist. The sweeping sightlines offer unparalleled opportunities for on-foot wildlife tracking. Dismount to track mule deer or observe predatory birds alongside specialized guides. Return to camp as the temperature drops, transitioning straight into fireside wine service and a hyper-local tasting menu prepared over open flames.
-
The physical rhythm of the trail takes over as you begin the descent back toward the main valleys. Navigate steep, forested switchbacks and execute deliberate river fords alongside the pack string. Arrive back at the primary wilderness ranch in the late afternoon. The ruggedness of the day is instantly countered by deep soaking tubs, thermal recovery, and a final celebratory provincial cellar pairing.
-
Enjoy a quiet, unhurried morning at the ranch. Take a final, short ride through the lower meadows before transferring seamlessly back to the private aviation terminal or your onward destination, taking the grounded, deliberate energy of the backcountry with you.
